As cities across Europe face increasing pressure from climate change, the need for resilient, sustainable and community-driven solutions has never been more urgent. NBSINFRA steps into this space with a clear ambition: to strengthen critical urban infrastructure through innovative Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) that not only reduce risks but also enhance biodiversity and improve quality of life.

Funded by the European Union, NBSINFRA is pioneering a new way of thinking about urban resilience. Rather than relying solely on traditional engineered measures, the project explores how nature itself can help cities better prepare for and respond to both natural and human-induced hazards.

To bring this vision to life, NBSINFRA is working closely with five diverse European regions, each serving as a City Lab where experimentation, learning, and co-creation take centre stage. These City Labs in Fingal (Ireland), Cologne (Germany), Ruse (Bulgaria), Aveiro (Portugal), and Prague (Czechia) will act as real-world testing grounds to assess the cost-effectiveness and impact of NBS in protecting local infrastructure.

At the heart of this approach lies collaboration. The City Labs are designed as inclusive spaces where citizens, end-users, city managers and civil society jointly shape the solutions their communities need. Through this process, NBSINFRA will generate locally tailored risk indicators and strengthen city management plans, supporting emergency responses and long-term resilience strategies.

In this newsletter, we introduce the project’s mission and the role of the City Labs, which are now beginning their journey.

Inside the NBSINFRA City Labs
Fingal - Ireland
Fingal - Ireland
Swords, a growing town north of Dublin, is the focus of the Fingal City Lab. NBSINFRA explores how nature-based solutions can help the area adapt to extreme weather and flooding, strengthening green infrastructure and safeguarding critical assets. The project aims to create a resilient “green necklace” of parks and natural buffers around the town.

Cologne - Germany
Cologne - Germany
The Cologne City Lab addresses river floods, flash floods, and urban heat islands in the Rhine region. NBS interventions, such as retention basins and floodplain restoration, complement existing grey infrastructure to protect homes, hospitals, and critical services while enhancing biodiversity and recreational spaces across the city and surrounding areas.

Ruse - Bulgaria
Ruse - Bulgaria
Ruse’s City Lab focuses on urban flash floods and infrastructure resilience. The project develops risk registries, community-oriented solutions, and NBS strategies to reduce flood impacts. Efforts also include innovative governance, financing, and awareness measures to promote sustainable urban adaptation in the Lower Danube region.

Aveiro - Portugal
Aveiro - Portugal
Aveiro’s City Lab explores water management and urban connectivity using NBS. Interventions will enhance canals, green corridors, and recreational spaces, demonstrating that nature-based solutions can be technically viable, socially accepted, and cost-effective, while strengthening community ecological, social, and economic resilience.

Prague - Czechia
Prague - Czechia
Prague’s City Lab transforms the Bubny Zátory brownfield into a resilient urban district for 25,000 residents. NBS are tested to tackle heavy rains, floods, and summer heatwaves, while providing leisure spaces. Monitoring results will guide future upscaling and replication of effective solutions across other European cities.
